“You define beauty yourself; society doesn’t define your beauty”
-Lady Gaga
Body image is a person’s opinions, feeling, and perception of the attractiveness of their body. Throughout history, people have given a lot of importance to a person’s body image and figure. People have concerns about their body figure, mainly about the weight, skin, hair, or a certain shape or size of a body part. People have the misconception that looking thin or having a certain body feature makes them more likable and attractive to people.
Body image has negative and positive factors in a person’s life. Positive body image is related to body satisfaction and acceptance, while negative body image leads to dissatisfaction and wanting to have a better body. Social media is one of the main reasons which cause people to wonder about their body image. Social media influences our thoughts in negative and positive aspects. Due to this, people are affected and get very self-conscious about their bodies. Body shaming also causes people to have negative thoughts. These lead to cutting down on eating or feeling immensely demotivated. Most of these lead to eating disorders, through which people cut down on eating food and reduce it significantly, hoping that it will help them reduce their body fat. Due to this, people will not receive the nutrition they require, which can lead to diseases or medical conditions.
Putting a stop to this can be started by raising awareness sessions and accepting every person the way they are. Supporting our fellow peers also helps in improving their self-confidence. Body image is just a way of discriminating against a few people, which we can put a stop to and make a better place for people.
