Most of us are facing a unique situation at our home and within our family, with schools and most workplaces closed. As a parent, one has to juggle work, run the household, as well as keep a track of children’s online schoolwork, and engage them in recreational activities. All of this is to be managed confined within the homespace, many a times without external support systems and help.
Being a parent in this time can lead to feelings of stress and anxiety. It may feel like there are too many roles and responsibilities to fulfill, which can be overwhelming. It is essential to remind yourself that this is a global emergency, and these unprecedented times are unique and challenging for people from all walks of life. It is important to find a balance in this new reality we are living in. Coping effectively with the different stressors in these times is not only essential for yourself, but for your family as well. The following are some ways of coping with the unique challenges of parenting during COVID:
Create a routine: It can be very helpful to add some structure to your everyday life. Having a routine for yourself and your family can give a sense of normalcy. Designate time for work, meals, recreation, etc. This will help manage the daily tasks effectively.
Set realistic goals: In your everyday life, set realistic goals for yourself that can be achieved. Do not forget to celebrate when you accomplish them! The celebration can be anything- from watching an episode of your favourite show, to cooking your favourite meal.
Engage in Self-Care: This is of utmost importance. Taking time for yourself and refreshing will work wonders. Self-care can be anything that you do for yourself, like spending some time alone, taking a long bath, attending online classes with your children, the list goes on and on. Anything that makes you feel good can be done.
