Understanding the Difference
Overeating in most cases is a conscious decision. Most people tend to overeat if they find the meal delicious, or if there is some occasion. Binge eating on the other hand is where a person tends to eat more without knowing. Compulsive and consistent overeating is a Binge Eating Disorder (BED) and is sometimes associated with mental health problems.
Some of the common causes of Binge Eating can be:
- Nervous system dysregulation and stress
- Nutrient deficiency
- Restrictive diet
- Lack of control
- Depression, Anxiety, Anger
- Trauma
- Body Image
Physical and Psychological Problems
Binge eating disorder may lead to an unhealthy and poor lifestyle. People with BED tend to zone out while eating to avoid the feeling of guilt and shame which results in social withdrawal. Medical conditions related to obesity, such as joint problems, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some sleep-related breathing disorders may be caused by the binge-eating disorder.
Preventive Measures
Mindful Eating– Mindful eating is a great way to gain control of eating habits. Mindfulness increases awareness of binging triggers while helping increase self-control and maintain self-acceptance.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy– This can help people learn to recognize the thoughts and feelings that trigger binge eating.
Regular Exercise– Different forms of physical activity like yoga, running, swimming, and playing a sport can help relieve stress and reduce binge eating.
Binge Eating Disorder can be treated with the right treatment plan and healthy lifestyle modifications. Parents should foster and reinforce a healthy body image, regardless of body shape or size.
