How Painting Benefits Your Brain

Painting can be a really fun activity for both children and adults alike. You don’t have to be Picasso to feel the joy of putting a brush to paper and creating a piece of art. Whether you paint with a reference in front of you or play freestyle with the colors, you’ll always find a fun result on your canvas. That splash of paint that your 6-year-old did on the drawing sheet can also become a fun decorative piece for their bedroom.

Painting is not only a lot of fun, but it benefits your brain as well. Here’s how:

  • It strengthens memory: Creative activities like painting, drawing etc. strengthen your visual memory and recollection skills; which in turn makes you less likely to develop a memory-related illness as you grow older.
  • It helps in emotional well-being: Art can be a great outlet for stress and negative emotions. It can even be a cathartic experience to let your emotions out through creativity. And of course, a stress-free mind means a healthy mind and body.
  • It builds problem-solving skills: When you are painting, your outcome is constantly evolving as you go, discovering new ideas. This creative process builds problem-solving skills, teaching you to think outside the box. If you make a mistake while painting, you can always alter it and turn it into something creative, coming up with something completely new in the process.
