
It is a common misconception that thyroid issues only affect adults. Did you know that thyroid problems are a very common endocrine disorder among school age kids? Two of the most common Thyroid problems in kids are hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
Hypothyroidism in Children: This occurs when enough hormones are not sent to the body by the thyroid gland. These hormones regulate many of the body’s functions, including metabolism. Reduced levels the hormones can slow the body systems down. Common symptoms in children include slowed growth, sluggishness, constipation, fatigue, hair loss, irregular menstrual cycle (in girls).
Hyperthyroidism in Children: This happens when the thyroid is overactive and sends excess of the hormone in the body. This can lead to an increase in the body’s metabolism. Common symptoms in children include feeling hot, irritability, difficulty concentrating, muscle weakness, Diarrhea.
