The cruciality of adhering to social distancing and personal hygiene protocols whilst in public forums has been expressed by leaders globally – be it political, or otherwise. Understandably so, considering the transmission of the novel Coronavirus is most likely to happen in communal spaces. However, does that mean that these protocols are to be ignored inside our homes?

Since the interiors of our houses are not exposed to multiple people, thereby the virus, following stringent norms might not be completely necessary. Be that as it may, there are a few things that need to be kept in mind to ensure we remain safe. According to UNICEF, these are a few precautions that we all need to take even while in the safety of our own homes.

  1. Don’t touch your face: Covid-19 is transmitted through direct contact with respiratory droplets of an infected person  which is why we need to avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth at all times.
  2. Don’t cough, sneeze into your hands: Cough or sneeze into either a tissue or the corner of your elbow instead of your hands. In case you are an asymptomatic carrier, doing this would prevent you from spreading the virus to other people.
  3. Maintain a distance of at least 3ft from people who are coughing: Coughing is one of the most common symptoms of the virus, which is why it’s best to keep a distance from those who are coughing.
  4. Wash your hands: Make sure you wash your hands (for 20 seconds) frequently, especially after touching anything coming from outside and after sneezing/coughing.

These are a few simple and effective methods to ensure a good personal hygiene is maintained while inside our homes. Battling a pandemic is painful, long, and cumbersome; but it’s not completely impossible.

The onus is on every individual inhabiting this planet to act responsibly and mitigate the spread. Where best to start than from home?
