Diabetes is an illness that occurs when the pancreas fail to make insulin or when the person’s body cannot utilise effectively the insulin produced. If you or anyone in your family is at risk for diabetes, you can make some lifestyle changes to try and prevent it from happening to you.

  • Try not to consume foods that have a lot of fat in them. Keeping check of the amount of fat you consume will prevent it from accumulating in parts of your body and making it resistant to the insulin produced.
  • Try to limit takeaway or processed foods and eat a balanced diet with healthy homemade meals. You should consume more fruits, vegetables and high fibre foods.
  • Exercise regularly, which can help you reduce blood glucose levels and manage weight as well. It will also help you control your blood pressure and cholesterol.

You can start by knowing your risk levels and having a healthy diet as well as exercise. The most important thing is to have regular check-ups with your doctor and stay up to date on your health.
