Preservatives are chemicals that are applied to food or food products to stop bacterial, moldy, fungal, and yeast-based spoiling. As a result, food preservatives help to increase the shelf life of food, keeping it fresher for longer.  You can now find a food item manufactured at a distant location, available at your neighborhood grocery store because of increased globalization and transportation efficiency.

Numerous additives are used today to preserve, package, and alter the flavor, appearance, texture, or nutritional content of food. However, research indicates that certain chemicals used as food additives should be avoided, especially for children. According to pediatricians, preservatives are far more dangerous to children. Due to their smaller size, children receive a higher “dose” of each chemical. They can be more vulnerable since their bodies are still growing. Some food additives, according to studies, may interfere with hormones, growth, and development. Some could increase a child’s risk of becoming obese. Children may be especially vulnerable to the effects of these additives.

The following are the effects of preservatives:

  • Increase the chances of breathing problems like asthma.
  • Obesity
  • Hyperactivity, neurological damage, and hypersensitivity
  • Hormonal imbalance

Parents need to keep a check on their children’s diet. Canned food and fast food, in general, should be avoided. They should read the labels of packaged food and get familiar with each and every ingredient of the products they use.
