Learning Disability (LD) is a neurological disorder that affects the brain’s ability to receive, process, store, and respond to information. A child with a learning disability may have difficulties in reading, writing, speaking, listening, understanding mathematical concepts, and general comprehension.

Types of Learning Disabilities

  1. Dyscalculia- Dyscalculia is a learning disability that affects a child’s ability to understand, learn, and perform math and number-based operations
  2. Dysgraphia- Dysgraphia is a learning disability that results in impaired fine motor skills and writing disability. It affects all elements of the writing process.
  3. Dyslexia- Dyslexia is defined as an unexpected difficulty in reading. People with dyslexia have trouble matching the letters they see on the page with the sounds those letters and combinations of letters make.
  4. Non-Verbal Learning Disability- NVLD is a learning disability that causes difficulty with motor, visual-spatial, and social skills. Most kids with non-verbal learning disorders have trouble reading emotions in facial cues and body language.
  5. Oral/Written Language Disorder- Oral/Written Language Disordercauses difficulty with understanding and/or expressing language often in both oral and written forms.

How can Parents help. There is no one answer to this question since every child is different and every family is different. However, some general things that parents can do to help their child with learning disabilities include:

  • Encouraging and supporting their child’s efforts in school
  • Helping their child to develop positive study habits and organizational skills
  • Working with their child’s teachers to develop an appropriate educational plan
  • Advocating for their child’s needs
  • Providing emotional support for their child

It is important to note that learning disabilities are not caused due to physical or mental illness, economic condition, or cultural background; neither do they indicate that the child is weak or lazy.
